The times. They are a changing. What was once a free-for-all is now a better managed and organized internet.

Major players like Google®, Inktomi® and MSN® have made great strides in the past 3 years in the effort to better index the content across the web. Their algorithms and bots have become more efficient and the speed with which they return to web sites can only make us think that in the future site indexing and search will be in real-time. What's more is that over 75% of Americans will use a search engine before they pick up the Yellow Pages®.

So what does this mean for web site owners? It means that being listed in the top organic (non-paid) results not only gives your company instant credibility, but a means of generating FREE sales leads.

Prior to mid 2007 it was possible to essentially 'buy' your way onto the first page of search engine results by out bidding others on your keyword campaigns for high demand search terms. Those times are over. Now if you're running an online keyword campaign and your site is unoptimized you have to pay a minimum bid per click of $10.00 or more! In contrast, if your site is optimized you'll pay about 10% of that. The new minimum bid requirements keeps scammers and spammers off of the results pages as their sites are rarely optimized for organic listings or paid listings.

However, this rule comes into play for everyone not just scammers. It's possible that you might be the premier toilet paper manufacturer in the country, but you have a poorly optimized site. If you were to launch an online keyword campaign targeting the keyword 'toilet paper', you would be faced with at least a $10 minimum bid regardless of your offline popularity. It's an automated process, and special cases will not be made no matter who you are.
